Dark Storm: Ascension Is Aiming To Take Out The Top Dogs Of The Stealth Action Genre

A couple of months ago we shared the exciting news that Fenrir Studios is currently developing Dark Storm: Asecension, a stealth action game set in an open world scifi universe. There’s no denying that the team was heavily inspired by AAA franchises like Metal Gear & Deus Ex, however this indie underdog promises they’ll be delivering a title that’ll rival any of their stealth action competitors. Based on everything I’ve seen thus far, they’re preparing to choke the life out of the competition.

Where a lot of games within the genre feel as if they’ve simply wrapped a new story around the same gameplay mechanics, its clear that Fenrir Studios doesn’t have that luxury so they’re building it all from the ground up. However they’ve started with a phenomenal foundation, everything about Dark Storm is being built around an original and beautifully written story. There isn’t any question to me that it’s the story and the characters within in it that have shaped the game so far and will continue to do so through development, they’re creating an immersive experience that you won’t want to put down. And that’s the way it should be…

However in order for Fenrir Studios to achieve their vision and deliver the game that we all deserve, they need our support on Kickstarter to get it done right.

Still trying to figure out how this upcoming indie title could possibly have, the critically acclaimed industry veteran, Kojima shaking in his Solid Snake pj’s?

Strong female characters…
Where some might feel the stealth action genre needs its rough and rugged men to make for a believable user experience, Fenrir Studios is going to prove that isn’t the case. Amber Kingsley is the protagonist of Dark Storm, they were determined to make her as realistic as possible. They’re anticipating you’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat at times as your desperately hoping she makes it out alive… You’ll find yourself identifying with her and caring about her as a character.

The Story
“By the year 2034, the world is on the brink of a Third World War as the United States and the Russian Federation is locked in a new Cold War. However, unlike the old era rivalry fought between two competing ideologies (Democracy and Communism), this new Cold War is one being waged over energy.

With natural resources almost all but extinguished, with fewer than fifty years of oil left in reserve, the world powers have begun to explore alternative means to fuel the next century; to fail would mean to the end of civilization as we know it. The leading hope is that Dark Matter might prove to be the golden ticket, as it has the possibility to bring about a new era for mankind, and solving the growing energy concerns that are fracturing the world. But who will crack the Dark Matter formula first?

Leading the way is Irving Dynamics, the world’s most powerful corporation and pioneer in advance science and applications. They have built deep within Alaska the most powerful Hadron Collider ever conceived by man. But on the eve of a breakthrough equal to the splitting of the atom, Irving’s facility came under a sudden attack from elite Russian Kresnik Division, which systematically ceased control of the base, killing all that stood in their way.

However, the Russian forces did not count on Amber Kingsley, who, despite being discharged by the United States Army a year prior, for leading a failed operation in North Korea, which resulted in the deaths of several of her men. Amber isn’t a mindless action hero. She is a skilled, honorable, and charismatic leader, and more than that, a noble friend. Amber’s goals aren’t to free the Apex Facility from the Russian forces, but to find and save her lifelong friend, Jill Haley – a senior member of the Irving staff. Her choices and actions will have far reaching consequences as Amber will stop at  nothing to undermine her enemy.

With Amber is Sya, an advanced artificial intelligence developed by Jill Haley. Together the two will embark on an adventure that will forever alter their lives, not to mention the course of human history.”

Kickstarter

Whether you’re wanting to know more or you’re ready to show your support, head over to their Kickstarter page and let them know what you think… I know there are times when I stumble onto a Kickstarter campaign and wish I had the ability to financially contribute, unfortunately that isn’t always the case. However there are other ways to show your support, simply helping to get the word out within the community is a great way to let them know they’ve got a fan within you.

Try it for yourself…

Just in case you’re still on the fence, they’ve made a demo/prototype of Dark Storm, which was built using the Unreal Developers Kit before their transition over to Unreal Engine 4. They’ve made this completely free to play during their Kickstarter campaign. Here’s a chance to watch this VR Mission in action before you run off to IndieDB and Steam to download your copy today…

For more insight into Dark Storm: Ascension, check out my exclusive interview with the Lead Writer & PR Manager Christopher Lee Buckner.

Developed by Fenrir Studios, they’re an indie studio that was formed in 2013 and inspired by Robert Smith and Javonni Ortiz. Having extreme passion for games, Robert and Javonni set on a mission to start their own production, “Dark Storm.” They wanted to create a game that challenged players mentally through skill, tactical stealth, and action. Being players themselves, they care about their player base and like to include player input for the game.
