Friday The 13th: The Game Is The Horror Experience Fans Have Been Dying To Play

Late last year Gun Media, developers of the successful Breach & Clear series, revealed Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp, their homage to the frightening horror film franchise Friday the 13th. It was clear that this was truly a passion project for the team, Summer Camp creator Wes Keltner said “This is my love letter to the Friday the 13th film series.”

The Summer Camp announcement caught the immediate attention of gamers and horror fiends alike, instantly instilling hope that Gun Media would be the ones to finally bring the slasher/ splatter genre to life in an entirely new horror gaming experience. Among the fans that found Summer Camp to be intriguing was Sean S. Cunningham, creator of the Friday the 13th franchise. Because of the potential Sean saw within Summer Camp, he approached the team earlier in the year to begin a conversation that would ultimately lead to the death of Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp as we knew it at the time.

Sean instantly recognized the passion Gun had for the project and the Friday the 13th source material, so much in fact that they decided to work together and overhaul Summer Camp to make the game they’d been dreaming of all along. For the first time in more than twenty-five years, Friday the 13th is returning to the video game world. Gun Media and IllFonic, in partnership with Crystal Lake Entertainment, are proud to announce that Friday the 13th: The Game is set to launch next Fall, 2016.

“It’s been nearly 30 years since fans have had the opportunity to experience a Friday the 13th video game.” explained Sean S. Cunningham, creator of the Friday the 13th franchise. “Technology has finally reached a level that allows us to produce an experience fans of the franchise deserve. It’s always been a dream of mine to let players fully BECOME Jason, and stalk camp counselors across a virtual Crystal Lake. I’m delighted we’re able to bring this fantasy to life!”

Friday the 13th: The Game is an online, asymmetric multiplayer experience where one player will assume the role of Jason Voorhees against seven other players assuming the roles of camp counselors trying to survive the night.

“As you can imagine the conversion from Slasher Vol.1: Summer Camp to Friday the 13th: The Game was a dream come true for our entire team” explained Ronnie Hobbs, of Gun Media. “1v7 asymmetrical multiplayer is a perfect fit for this franchise, and we can’t wait to share our creation with fans across the world.”

Developed by Gun Media and IllFonic, Friday the 13th: The Game will deliver a terrifying combination of features designed to satisfy gamers and fans of the Friday the 13th franchise alike. In addition to bringing the tension and horror of the movies to life, the game will also let players don the mask of Jason Voorhees for the first time and control all new levels of brutal action! The development team had earlier collaborated on the unreleased survival horror-themed game Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp and plans to integrate much of that design into the new Friday the 13th game.

I recently had an opportunity to talk with Wes Keltner, Co-Creator of Friday the 13th: The Game, he had this to say about the evolution of Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp “This is one of those once in a lifetime opportunities for me. We started designing this little slasher game, about a year ago. And here we are, sitting on the largest horror franchise to earth. It’s beyond surreal. It was already rewarding punching the clock with Tom Savini, Kane Hodder and Harry Manfredini. I mean, seriously, it’s insane to think about. But then you add in Sean and the Friday the 13th license. It’s hard to put into words. It was a tremendous amount of hard work, and being in the right place, at the right time. It’s still hard to believe.”

The development team is also excited to announce a Kickstarter for the upcoming game, designed to expand the scope of the game and give backers the ability to be a part of the franchise forever – by claiming special rewards ranging from early access to the game and unlocking various Jason’s from the films to once-in-a-lifetime access to horror legends and even claiming a role within the game as one of the counselors! For more information on how you can be a part of the Friday the 13th legacy head over to the Kickstarter page. This will ensure the team is able to create the Friday the 13th experience that fans have been dying for, without the interference of a publisher looking to reach a wider audience with a “T” for Teen rating.

Whether you’re wanting to know more or you’re ready to show your support, head over to their Kickstarter and let them know what you think… I know there are times when I stumble onto a Kickstarter campaign and wish I had the ability to financially contribute, unfortunately that isn’t always the case. However there are other ways to show your support, simply helping to get the word out within the community is a great way to let them know they’ve got a fan within you.
