Friday The 13th: The Game Breaks The $500K Barrier, Revealing Their First Wave Of Stretch Goals

It’s no secret that I’m a self proclaimed horror fiend, so it shouldn’t come as a shock that I’m thrilled by the prospect of Friday The 13th: The Game becoming a reality.

However in order for the nightmare of every camp counselor to rise from the depths of Camp Crystal Lake, Gun Media is relying on the fans to #UnleashJason on Kickstarter. The campaign has been live for 11 days, however thanks to the 7,592 backers and all of the fans that have been keeping the conversation alive, they’ve managed to break the $500,000 barrier bringing the team one step closer to their $700,000 baseline goal.

Hitting the $500K mark not only means that the team is one step closer to making Friday The 13th: The Game a reality, its also the threshold in which Gun media was going to reveal the first batch of their stretch goals.

And they delivered… Horror Block

  • 700,000 – THE GAME IS MADE: The Game is completed as designed, with Jason Voorhees as the featured killer.
  • 725,000 – MIRROR SMASH: Jason gets 7 years of bad luck in the most brutal way possible. The mirror smash environmental kill is added.
  • 750,000 – SAVINI’S WORKSHOP: Behind the scenes interview added to the game. Watch Savini, Sultan of Splatter, and his apprentice create an all-new Jason.

  • 800,000 – RIP YOUR HEART OUT: Rip out the hearts of counselors! Jason gets this deadly move added to his arsenal of kills.

  • 1,250,000 – THROWN OUT THE WINDOW: From Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, this classic kill that featured Tina, will be added to the game as an environmental kill.
  • 1,275,000 – THAT’S NOT FLAME RETARDANT: A grislier sleeping bag kill, roasted alive over an open flame. This warm and toasty demise becomes an environmental kill.
  • 1,325,000 – NOOSE OF DEATH: A nod to the Noose scene from Part III, implemented as an environmental kill.
  • 1,500,000 – EVEN MORE DEATH: Adds 5 more weapons for Jason to use in his kill combos.

Earlier this week the team revealed another stretch goal on bloodydisgusting.com, in fact it’s the most expensive and perhaps the most ambitious stretch goal on their list…

  • 4,050,000 – Pamela Voorhees: “Play as the original killer from the first Friday the 13th film. Jason’s mom, Pamela Voorhees! Complete with a whole new animation set. Everyone knows what Jason can do, but how will Pamela play? Can she morph around the map? Can she still perform all the brutal kills that her baby boy can? Or, will she have to rely on stealth to execute the camp counselors?”.

For anyone that may still be on the fence, let’s take a moment to look at why I’m so excited about this game becoming a reality. And if that isn’t quite enough, check out my Exclusive Q&A with Wes Keltner, Co-Creator of Friday The 13th: The Game.

  • Created By Hardcore Fans, For Hardcore Fans: From the very beginning, Gun Media set out to create their “love letter to the Friday the 13th film series” with the development of Slasher Vol 1: Summer Camp. They set out to create an online asymmetrical multiplayer that would not only capture the overwhelming terror of the counselors as they’re being stalked and preyed upon, but for the first time in gaming history they wanted to give players the opportunity to become the monster that is Jason Voorhees.
  • An Authentic Gaming Experience: In order to create the most authentic experience possible, the team knew they needed to enlist the help of legends to truly bring their vision to life… Legendary Special FX Artist Tom Savini has been crafting the kills and look of Jason, Mad Man Extraordinaire Kane Hodder is bringing Jason to life through motion capture and stunt coordination, and Composer Harry Manfredini is bringing the soundscape to life to complete the package.
  • One Hell Of An Audition: After Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp was revealed last year, Sean Cunningham, creator of the Friday the 13th series, reached out to Gun Media to schedule a meeting to discuss their project. Once they met, Sean instantly recognized the passion that Gun had for the project and the Friday the 13th source material. So it isn’t a surprise that after he saw the progress they made on Summer Camp, he decided to gift the Friday the 13th license to the team at no cost. Not only did he give them the rights to the franchise to create the definitive Friday The 13th game, but he signed on to help in the development. Honestly, what more could you ask for?

UPDATE 10/26

Long before Gun Media revealed any of their Stretch Goals, the fans & backers had been quite vocal about the elements they were hoping to see in the final version of the game. When the first wave of stretch goals were revealed, the community spoke up and the developers were listening… they’ve talked amongst themselves and re-evaluated their goals and what it’ll cost to deliver them for the fans. As a result, they’ve managed to re-configure, re-order, re-plan, and reduce costs to make these goals more attainable.

  • 700,000 – THE GAME IS MADE: The Game is completed as designed, with Jason Voorhees as the featured killer.
    • 700,000 – SAVINI’S WORKSHOP: Behind the scenes interview added to the game. Watch Savini, Sultan of Splatter, and his apprentice create an all-new Jason.

  • 1,450,000 – EVEN MORE DEATH: Adds 5 more weapons for Jason to use in his kill combos.

In addition to the updates on the previously revealed goals, there is still a long list of goals that have not yet been revealed on the Kickstarter. Among those unrevealed goals, Gun Media continued their efforts to not only make the planned goals more attainable but they’ve also incorporated brand new goals based on the fan feedback. Even though their goal is to be able to provide the fans with all of the Stretch Goals on day one, they’re going to consider providing the unfunded goals as post-launch DLC updates.

Whether you’re still wanting to know more or you’re ready to show your support, head over to the Kickstarter and let them know what you think… There are times when I stumble onto a Kickstarter campaign and wish I had the ability to financially contribute, unfortunately that isn’t always the case. However there are other ways to show your support, simply helping to get the word out within the community is a great way to let them know they’ve got a fan within you.
