Disney Interactive definitely raised the bar with Disney Infinity 3.0, the newly added features and overall ease of use enhancements to the creativi toys & logic connections makes for a magical toy box gaming experience.
Even when you take a look at the 3.0 Playsets, compared to those from 2.0, they deliver a far more satisfying experience that immerses gamers of all ages into the fun and engaging gameplay. However despite all of the accolades that the current playsets have received, the upcoming Marvel Battlegrounds has easily been one of the most anticipated as it promises to bring a completely new style of gameplay to Infinity. Fans have been chomping at the bit to get their hands on the Super Smash Bros. styled arena brawler that’ll allow you to breathe new life into all of your Marvel figures.
“With Disney Infinity 3.0, we’ve aimed to provide a wider variety of gameplay you’re playing a play set intended for so many characters,” said Disney Infinity 3.0 Art Director Jeff Bunker. “We’ve had cross-over characters and that’s been a lot of fun, but the gameplay is more of a perk, a bonus. In the case of ‘Battlegrounds,’ it’s our intention to bring all of those characters together and be balanced.”
Even though we’re still eagerly awaiting the release of this Playset, today we get our first look at the retail packaging for Marvel Battlegrounds and we’ll dig into the details.
Based on the promo art that we’ve seen advertising the upcoming playset, it’s been pretty clear all along that we’ll be receiving Captain America The First Avenger as a bundled figure. Of course this makes perfect sense when you take into consideration the next feature in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Captain America Civil War, which results in our heroes choosing sides and defending what they believe to be right… by force. If an arena brawler doesn’t feel like the perfect way to capture the essence of Civil War, I can’t think of a better way of accomplishing it. Of course we’ve also learned the Marvel roster will be expanding, thanks to recently leaked Marvel figures that appeared online. I can only imagine these new figures will be appearing just in time for the release of Battlegrounds.
However the 2nd playset figure has remained a mystery, until now… Thanks to an updated pre-order option on BHphotovideo.com, we now have our answer to that question. We’ve also learned that the Playset will ring in at $29.99, $5 less than normal.
If you ask me, it’s a little disappointing that Battlegrounds is only going to be bundled with Cap. However I’m a bit of an optimist, so I’m hoping there’s a reason they’re making a departure from the standard 2 figure Playset packaging. If that’s the case, Battlegrounds must be delivering far more depth than your standard arena brawler. The sticker on the package states “4-player combat across 12 levels in 8 new epic arenas!”, while the official description suggests they may have woven an actual storyline into the gameplay. Unfortunately the Infinity team has been pretty tight lipped about the specifics, aside from what they’ve already revealed. I’ve got to admit, I’m really hoping they’re going to be stepping outside of the normal arena brawler formula to deliver a truly special playset.
According to the official Disney Infinity site, “Evil forces scheme for world conquest as they pit Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes against each other! It’s an all out brawl in Marvel Battlegrounds!”
Set around Loki’s need to obtain an Infinity Stone, you’ll battle in a variety of places from a Brooklyn train yard to SHIELD’s Lunar Base. Along the way, you’ll fight more than just a handful of villains and will need help from every hero you can find.
“The A.I. we have is very compelling,” Bunker said. “I think our fans are going to get a kick out of it. It’s completely different from every other play set.”
Marvel Battlegrounds will allow you to “battle up to 3 opponents in the arena with 4-person local multiplayer”. The addition of local 4 player is probably the greatest Enhancement you could make to Disney Infinity, this is what I’ve been screaming about ever since 1.0 initially launched. Including this functionality into the game would dramatically change the way my kids and I play the game, no more would I be tasked with the role of referee instead I’d be able to enjoy playing with everyone.
With that being said, will this game changing update be carried through all of 3.0 when Battlegrounds launches?
Unfortunately John Vignocchi, VP of Production for Disney Infinity, confirmed via Twitter that this phenomenal update will only be available on the Battlegrounds Playset. Hopefully that’ll change one of these days, until then I’ll continue to keep the peace the best I can. Regardless of whether or not it’ll be carried throughout the game, you’ve got to wonder how it’ll work in this playset from a toys to life standpoint. Clearly the current portal only has slots for 2 figures, even if you were to release an update enhancing the power disc slot this would still only be enough for 3 figures at a time.
I’m assuming we’ll see 1 of 3 options come into play, then again I could be completely off base altogether.
- We’ll need to have 2 separate portals plugged in at the same time.
- Each player will receive a pre-fight prompt, where they’ll need to scan their figure assigning it to the right player.
- The playset will recognize all of the Marvel figures that we own and we’ll see a standard fighting game style roster that we’ll be able to use for our character selection.
Regardless of what I think, only time will truly tell on this one… however I know which of those scenarios I’d prefer. How would you like to see this implemented?
However another interesting tidbit that I’ve recently learned about the Battlegrounds playset is you’ll be able to use up to a total of 6, round, power discs within the arena at a time. Each power disc will unleash a unique, rechargeable ability that can be harnessed throughout the battle. I’m assuming that the power discs will essentially be pooled and can be used by anyone during the fight on a first come basis, however that is merely my own impression as I haven’t seen anything concrete on that yet.
I don’t know about you, but I’m curious and excited all at the same time and I’m ready to get hands on with it. Unfortunately we still have some time to wait before the Playset is released, however if you want to check out the gameplay in action here’s a video from October that features the first publicly aired battle for Battlegrounds.
Regardless of the questions that are still unanswered at this time, I’m still looking forward to the release of Marvel Battlegrounds for the fact that it’ll be delivering a completely new gameplay experience into Disney Infinity. Hopefully this will introduce the unlockable ability to create our own arena brawlers within the toybox.
Just to recap what we know about the Marvel Battlegrounds playset:
- An internet connection will be required for the first use, just like the recently leaked characters & power discs.
- Bundled with Captain America only.
- Features 12 levels.
- 8 distinct arenas, each with environmental attacks & destructibility.
- Compatible with every Marvel figure.
- Introducing 4 player local multiplayer.
- The ability to introduce rechargeable special attacks using power discs.
As Disney Interactive continues to push forward and integrate new features and styles of gameplay into the Infinity Universe, the more we’ll get to push our imaginations to bring unique world’s & experiences to life within it.
